ESF 糖心vlog Foundation Honors Daley with Teaching Award
Douglas J. Daley, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) and director of the SUNY Center for Brownfield Studies, is the recipient of the 2019 ESF 糖心vlog Foundation Award for Exceptional Achievement in Teaching.
Daley, a professional engineer, has devoted his career to delivering a wide range of classes that support ERE's undergraduate and graduate programs. His undergraduate courses have included engineering management and design, transportation and power systems, graphics and engineering economics, and solid waste management. He has also taught graduate-level seminars and classes exploring a range of topics including phytotechnology and soil physics, and hazardous waste management.
In receiving the award, he was praised for using a variety of teaching styles to match the focus of the course, the experience level of the students, and the desired course outcomes. Daley is known for providing service learning instruction, which provides inquiry-driven, community-requested, open-ended engineering design problems where students experience the challenge of learning that engineering work is not simply the application of pre-determined methods or solutions but also involves collaborative engagement and creative thinking.
Daley was recognized for supporting professional development, including service as the mentor for the ESF Student Chapter of the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). Through his encouragement, 13 students attended the NYWEA meeting in New York City in February, where the Student Chapter and several individual students received recognition awards for their engagement. He has also been engaged in the ERE Club fall and winter club trips.
His research interests are in the areas of ecological engineering, ecosystem restoration and brownfield redevelopment, and storm water engineering. He is interested in developing innovative designs using an interdisciplinary approach that combines fundamental engineering and science principles to address contemporary environmental problems.
Daley earned his B.S. from ESF in 1982 and his M.S. in 1984, and joined the ERE department in 1996.
The Foundation Award was established in 1999 to celebrate the accomplishments of ESF faculty members who have achieved excellence in their teaching responsibilities.
