Lion Conservation Take Centerstage at Centennial Lecture
Dr. Jerrold Belant will explore past efforts and future needs in lion conservation, drawing from his recent experiences in the Serengeti ecosystem during his talk "Pride of the Serengeti: Assessing the past, planning the future of lion conservation in Africa" 7:30 p.m. April 3 in the Gateway Center.
Africa's lions have lost more than 80 percent of their historic range, and their population has declined in recent years by more than 40 percent. Strategies for conserving lions often seem straightforward, but the reality is complex. Belant, the inaugural Camp Fire Conservation Fund professor at ESF, will explore past efforts and future needs in lion conservation.
Belant has expertise is in the ecology, conservation and management of large mammals. In addition to his work with lions in Tanzania, he has studied brown bear, black bear, deer, elk, moose, wolf and coyote across North America. The endowed Camp Fire Conservation Fund professorship was created in partnership with the Camp Fire Conservation Fund, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the ESF Roosevelt Wild Life Station.
Admission to the lecture and reception is free. Parking is available on the ESF campus.
