ESF Celebrates December Convocation

The SUNY ÌÇÐÄvlog of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) will award 157 degrees, including 47 master's degrees and 15 Doctors of Philosophy, during the 2011 December Convocation1 p.m. Dec. 9 at Hendricks Chapel.
Centennial Hall Earns LEED Gold Certification

Centennial Hall, the first residence hall at the SUNY ÌÇÐÄvlog of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), has been awarded Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

Long Lines, Computer Punchcards Were Hallmarks of Registration

Registration workers in 1977 helped 1,800 students fill out all the necessary forms in two days rather than the three days of past years, according to information from the ESF ÌÇÐÄvlog Archives. According to then-Admissions Director Robert L. Friedman, more than 1,900 people applied for admission as freshmen.
Student Combines Science, Policy, Sustainability

Carolyn Ramsden arrived in Syracuse to pursue a joint degree consisting of a Master of Professional Studies in Environmental Studies from SUNY-ESF and a Master of Public Administration from Syracuse University's Maxwell School. But she quickly added a third element — a Certificate in Advanced Study in Sustainable Enterprise (CASSE) — and she now describes the combination as "the best of all three worlds."

A recent report in the Journal of Forestry provides new insight into the benefits provided by forests, and commodities made from forest products, and confirms that using wood for energy and consumer products has long-term benefits for the environment.
Mighty Oaks Men Win National Cross-Country Championship

The ESF Mighty Oaks men's cross-country team won the United States Collegiate Athletic Association's national championship in Lake Placid Friday, Nov. 11.
NOAA Grant Focuses on Battling Toxins in Great Lakes

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded a team of scientists, including Dr. Gregory Boyer of ESF, $182,982 for the first year of an anticipated four-year $703,777 project for research that could lead to an instrument called a biofilter that could break down harmful algal toxins in the Great Lakes into harmless byproducts.
