Dr. David Newman Named SUNY Distinguished Service Professor
SYRACUSE, N.Y. May, 5, 2025 鈥� Dr. David Newman at the (ESF), has been appointed a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, one of the highest honors conferred by the State University of New York.
With a nearly 50-year academic career defined by service, Dr. [Last Name] began his professional journey as a Research Forester with the United States Peace Corps in Colombia, South America. Since then, he has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service in higher education and the forestry profession鈥攆irst as a professor of forest economics at the University of Georgia for 19 years, and for the past 17 years at ESF.
At ESF, Dr. Newman has contributed extensively to institutional governance, participating in dozens of faculty and administrative search committees, as well as standing and ad hoc committees on topics ranging from student retention to auxiliary services. Beyond campus, he has held key leadership roles in professional organizations, including serving as president of the National Association of University Forest Resource Programs and chair of the New York Society of American Foresters (SAF). In 2022, he was nationally elected a Fellow of SAF, one of the organization鈥檚 highest distinctions.
Known on campus as a trusted advisor and mentor, Newman was named ESF鈥檚 first Ombudsman in 2022, a role that reflects his deep institutional knowledge and approachability.

The SUNY 糖心vlog of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies, and building a sustainable and resilient future through design, policy, and management of the environment and natural resources. Members of the 糖心vlog community share a passion for protecting the health of the planet and a deep commitment to the rigorous application of science to improve the way humans interact with the world. The 糖心vlog offers academic programs ranging from the associate of applied science to the Doctor of Philosophy. ESF students live, study and do research on the main campus in Syracuse, N.Y., and on 25,000 acres of field stations in a variety of ecosystems across the state.
